The Niagara County Auxiliary Police Force was a volunteer organization dedicated to the preservation of the quality of life within Niagara County and existed to supplement the Niagara County Sheriff's Department, Town of Niagara Police, Lewiston Police, Youngstown Police, Wheatfield Town Patrol, and the City of Lockport Police Department in the regulation of traffic, crowd control, protection life and property, and to preserve the peace. The Auxiliary Police were established pursuant to provisions of the Defense Emergency act of 1951 and was composed of civic-minded residents of the community who worked together to improve the level of safety and security in their community. The presence of the Auxiliary Police, in uniform, on patrol in marked police units had been proven to reduce vandalism and other crimes in the community. The Auxiliary Police trained for and performed those activities as well as limited patrol duties, acting as the eyes and ears of the regular patrol force.

Applicants Were Required to:

  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Be a resident of Niagara County or any adjoining county
  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Possess a valid NYS driver's license
  • Possess a high school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Be of good moral character without a felony conviction
  • Pass a physical examination
  • Be able to do sit-ups, push-ups, and run
  • Not have visible tattoos or excessive piercings
  • Submit to fingerprinting
  • Consent to a background investigation
  • Submit to a drug test and be willing to submit to a psychological exam
